Six new meet records were established on the final day of the fourth Kegalle District Open Masters Athletic Championship concluded at Kegalle Public ground yesterday. Altogether a total of 13 new records were set up at this meet which was conducted by the Sri Lanka Athletic Association.
Kegalle District emerged overall champions while Colombo District finished in second place. Gampaha and Kandy Districts ended in third and fourth places respectively.
The meet was conducted under the patronage of Chief Minister of Sabaragamuwa Province Maheepala Herath. M.M.P. Kanthilatha (Gampaha) set a new record for the Javelin Throw in the 45-49 age group (Women’s) event with a distance 24.42m to erase the old record of 20.54m set by I. Warnakulasooriya of Anuradhapura District in the year 2008.
S.H.R Silva (Colombo) set a new record for the 1,500m in the 62-64 age group (Women’s) event with a time of 7.17.8 secs to improve on his own record 7.20.8 secs set up this year.
S.H.R. Silva (Colombo) also set up a record in the 3,000m under 45-49 age group (Women’s) event with a time of 16.23.2 sec. The earlier too was held by her district mate S.H.D Silva in 2008, clocking 21.54.4 secs
Malkanthi Sachithananda (Colombo) set a new record for the Discus Throw in the 70-74 age group (Women’s) event with a distance 10.35m to improve on her own record 9.93m set in 2008
W.J.C.Q. Fernando of Colombo set a new record for the Shot Putt event (65-70 age group - women’s) event with a time of 12.50.3 secs. The earlier record was established by Austin Samarasundara - 20.51.8 secs.
The other records established were W.C. Premaratne of Colombo in the 5km walk (50-55 age group - Women’s) - 35.28.4 secs, (old record 37.11.1 secs), I. Karunarathne of Gampaha in the Long Jump (60-64 age group - Women’s) - 3.69m. (old record 3.46m), K.M. Karunaratne of Kandy in the 400m (70-75 age group - Men’s) - 1.14.7 secs, (old record 1.14.19 secs), N.L.W. Narasinghe of Kandy in the 3,000m (70-75 age group - Men’s) - 14.18.9. (old record 14.26.24 secs), J.M. Punchi Banda of Kegalle in the Long Jump (70-75 age group - Men’s) - 4.38m. (old record 3.98m), R.A. Gunasekara of Kegalle in the Shot Putt (75-80 age group - Men’s) - 6.28m. (old record 4.66m).
