The Tax Poem of Sri Lanka

The Tax Poem by Mr. O.M Weerasooiya

(*Mr. OM Weerasooiya is a Retired Commissioner General of Inland Revenue
and a Corporate Member of Sri Lanka Institute of taxation and former
Treasurer of Netherlands Alumni Association of Lanka.)*
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A personal note:

Mr. O M Weerasooriya has done a wonderful job by writing this poem but
there is something that we would like you to know.

A Developed country will collect 20 to 35% as taxes in this world.
A Developing country will collect 35 to 42.5% as taxes.

Today Sri Lanka collects 63% as taxes. Every 100 rupees you earn 63 rupees
will go back to the government as taxes.
This means Sri Lanka is heading for disaster like Zimbabwe who collects a
whopping 88% as taxes.

Support somebody who could change this at least to a developing level.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Tax Poem

At first I thought this was funny...then I realized the awful truth of it.
Be sure to read all the way to the end as that's the punch line!

Tax his land, tax his bed,
Tax the table at which he's fed.
Tax his tractor, tax his mule,
Tax his cow, tax his goat,
Teach him taxes are the rule.

Tax his work, Tax his pay,
He works for peanuts Anyway!
Tax his pants, Tax his coat.
Tax his ties, tax his shirt,
Tax his work, tax his dirt.

Tax his tobacco, tax his drink,
Tax him if he tries to think.
Tax his cigars, Tax his beers,
If he cries tax his tears.
Tax his car, Tax his gas,
Find other ways to tax his ass.

Tax all he has, then let him know
That you won't be done, till he has no dough
When he screams and hollers;
Then tax him some more,
Tax him till he's good and sore.

Then tax his coffin, Tax his grave,
Tax the sod in which he's laid.
Put these words upon his tomb,
'Taxes drove me to my doom...'

When he's gone, do not relax,
Its time to ap ply the inheritance tax.

Accounts Receivable Tax, Airline surcharge tax

Duminda Silva @ Wikipedia

Arumadura Lawrence Romelo Duminda Silva is a controversial Sri Lankan politician and Member of Parliament. Silva is the brother of Raynor Silva, managing director Asia Broadcasting Corporation which operates a number of radio stations in Sri Lanka.

 Political career
At the July 2004 provincial council election Silva was elected to represent Colombo District in the Western Provincial Council.[3] He defected from the United National Party to the United People's Freedom Alliance in November 2007.[2] The UNP accused Silva of defecting to the UPFA in the hope that the criminal cases against him won't be pursed and so that Asia Broadcasting Corporation's broadcasting licences will restored.[4] Silva was re-elected at the April 2009 provincial council election.[5] At the April 2010 parliamentary election Silva was elected to represent the Colombo District in Parliament.[6]

 Child rape
An underage girl was allegedly abducted and raped by Silva and others at a Mount Lavinia hotel on 8 July 2003. On 9 June 2005 Silva, Mohommed Nisham Hansil Ishar and Dilkushan Marlon Francis Kuruppu were indicted before Colombo High Court on charges of abduction and rape.[7] Silva pleaded not guilty and was released on bail. The case sagainst Silva was dropped on 11 October 2010 after the victim complained that it was causing her "emotional distress".[8] Silva was discharged on 24 March 2011.

Abductions
Silva was accused of abducting Roger Allan Francis and Chaminda Sumith Kumara Dunusinghe on 6 August 2004 from Francis' office in Bambalapitya.[10] Silva, 30, had been having a secret relationship with Francis' eldest daughter, 20. When Francis found out he objected to the relationship due to the age difference. The daughter moved out of the family home and moved in with Silva. On 6 August 2004 Silva and his gang went to Francis' office and demanded that his youngest daughter be given to Silva. When Francis refused he and his aide were abducted by Silva and his gang and taken to Malabe. The two were returned to the office later. Silva was charged and tried at Colombo High Court in 2008. Silva had been in a relationship with actress and Southern provincial councillor Anarkalli Aakarsha. Aakarsha claimed that the relationship ended when Silva started physically abusing her. She claimed that on 18 June 2008 Silva threatened to kill her and her mother if Aakarsha refused to marry Silva.[12] In July 2008 Aakarsha lodged a complaint with Kollupitiya Police that supporters of Silva tried abuduct her and her mother from Aakarsha's home on Swarna Road, Wellawatte on 3 March 2008.The case was heard at Mount Lavinia Court. On 23 September 2010 Aakarsha appeared before the court and tried unsuccessfully to withdraw her complaint.[15] The case against Silva was dropped on 18 November 2010 because the Attorney General claimed there wasn't enough evidence to prosecute Silva.

Assaults

Silva was arrested in 2006 for allegedly asaaulting Western Provincial Council Minister Hector Bethmage in Talangama. On 26 May 2006 Silva allegedly assaulted a female American sailor and two other American security officers from the US Embassy at a nighclub in Colombo.Silva was arrested and borught before Colombo Magistrates.

Anonymous Sri Lanka Attacks Apple,Facebook & Others

A hacker group calling itself Anonymous Sri Lanka announced this week that it had successfully launched a DNS Cache Snoop Poisoning attack against Apple, Facebook, and other high-profile tech companies. In a post to hacker hangout and repository Pastebin, the group released the primary DNS name server records associated with those companies, listing hundreds of entries, some of which these companies may not have intended to make public. Anonymous Sri Lanka (ignoring the irony of the lack of anonymity such specifics impart) posted lists of all of the name server records with names like, “APPLE.COM - World’s Largest Consumer Electronics Leader DNSi,” and “FACEBOOK.COM - The World’s Social Media Giant - DNS R00T3D, Fuck3D and Leaked.” To that effect, the group offered a (vaguely literate) mini-manifesto to explain its attack against Facebook, writing: Yo Facebook Assholes - If you want to run a Social Network - do it as it is as a real guys. Don’t try be smart asses. You are the most stupid and notorious fuckheads ever. The way you control and treat to your members are not acceptable under any circumstances. But we don’t care who you are and what you do. Do not BLOCK the people and do not CONTROL them. Where is your fucking FREEDOM or the SOCIALISM. Censorship = Freedom (Don’t try to change the meaning of the wordings). Let the people have their own freedom on the social networks. This is hack against your fuckhead censorship. The group offered no such commentary on Apple. In the headers of their post, they claimed that, “Primary DNS Server Hacked with DNS Cache Snoop Poisoning.” They offered no proof of the cache poisoning, but did provide proof of the snooping in the form of listing Apple’s DNS name servers. For most of us mortals, there’s not a whole lot in the information in that list. The group found the company’s DNS name servers, showed that it tried to perform a zone transfer on those servers (it failed), and then listed hundreds of individual servers such as: •17.254.3.16 gidget16.apple.com •17.254.3.65 customer.apple.com •17.254.2.108 testswupdate.apple.com As we said, that doesn’t seem all that interesting. What it does, however, is provide a starting point for others to probe these individual servers for vulnerabilities. Even that may not seem like a big deal, especially for a domain like customer.apple.com, which was already known to exist. For the rest, servers like jobsws2.apple.com, the starting point could be seen as valuable to the bad guys and a nuisance to Apple and its cyber security team. Plus, it’s fun to conclude that that stands for “Jobs Work Station #2.” Then there are listings such as icloudstatus.apple.com, which could suggest that Apple is working on a monitoring tool for iCloud status. The company provided such tools for .Mac and MobileMe, and doing so for the much larger iCloud is logical. Similarly, webcast.apple.com does resolve to a page with the image below. ZOMG! Is that an unannounced product? Our guess is that it’s an internal tool for meetings, but it’s another example of the bad guys having a new starting point.

20 Sri Lankan actresses are prostitutes

The Sri Lankan police said on Tuesday that they are on the hunt for more than 20 local television actresses who are believed to be part of a prostitution ring.

Over the past few weeks, police have arrested four actresses who were involved in prostitution at various locations in Colombo and areas most frequented by tourists, Xinhua reported.

Police said the arrest of popular local actresses involved in prostitution had blown the lid on what is believed to be a major prostitution ring.

The Sri Lankan police have now sought public assistance to locate the whereabouts of 20 actresses who have gone into hiding.

Apart from local prostitutes, Sri Lanka is also known to have foreign sex workers working in clubs which mainly cater to tourists.

A recent US State Department report said Sri Lankan women and children are subjected to sex trafficking in brothels in the country, especially in the Anuradhapura area in north central Sri Lanka.

In 2009, Sri Lanka's National Child Protection Authority estimated that approximately 1,000 children were subjected to commercial sexual exploitation within the country although some agencies believed the actual number was between 10,000 and 15,000.

Sanga's Lords speech

Kumar Sangakkara Speech at Lords :

http://mcc.sportslinemedia.co.uk/cowdrey-lecture.html

Former Sri Lankan captain Kumar Sangakkara launched scathing attack against the cricket establishment in the country for indulging in corrupt practices which he feels needs to be eradicated at the earliest. In an hour-long speech during the MCC's Spirit of Cricket lecture at the Lord's, Sangakkara charted the unique history of cricket in his country, and called on Sri Lanka Cricket to root out its corrupt practices, and recognise the huge role that the sport now needs to play in promoting reconciliation at the end of a 30-year civil war. Terming the 1996 World Cup victory as something that unified the country Sangakkara feels the historic event changed the dynamics of the SLC. He said that change happened as it turned "from a volunteer-led organisation run by well-meaning men of integrity into a multimillion-dollar organisation that has been in turmoil ever since." Although he didn't take Sanath Jayasuriya's name, but he did express his displeasure at how Jayasuriya who is a sitting MP was recalled into the team for a one-off T20 and the first ODI. Without naming names, Sangakkara voiced his concern at the direction the sport in his country is now heading. "Players from within the team itself became involved in power games within the board," he said. "Officials elected to power in this way in turn manipulated player loyalty to achieve their own ends. At times, board politics would spill over into the team causing rift, ill feeling and distrust," he was quoted as saying. .

Sri Lanka proves the fake nature of the Channel Four Video at the UN

It has been emphasized to act swiftly and efficiently by the diplomatic missions to defeat international conspiracies such as Darusman report and Channel Four video. Aan international expert on eradication of terrorism Prof. Rohan Gunarathne points out that the LTTE which was militarily defeated in Sri Lanka is now actively engaged politically abroad . He says that the LTTE seem to be using human rights organizations and media as a cats paw to achieve their aimss. Prof.Gunarathne said that UN permanent representative and his deputy were able to prove that the Channel Four video was a fake. Therefore he said that this example should be followed by other diplomatic missions abroad. However he pointed out the need to create a mechanism to response to the propaganda of pro-LTTE elements. Lakbima news Chief Editor Rajpal Abeynayake says that information to nullify such charges against Sri Lanka could be found from the international arena. He says that Sunday Times of London has revealed the fake nature of the Channel Four video. Mr. Abeynayake further said that by communicating such information to other countries Sri Lanka can eliminate false rumours about the country. Chief editor of the Island News Paper Shamindra Ferdinando says that diplomatic service has to respond first to reference ot the co-untry abroad. He says that Sri Lanka should device a method to communicate such information to other countries with the active participation of the diplomatic service. He appreciated the efforts taken by Deputy UN Representative Major General Shavendra Silva to prove the fake nature of the video with clear evidence. He further pointed out that Sri Lanka’s permanent UN representatives and his deputy were able to prove with evidence the contradictory series of incidents shown in the video.

Hashan Tillakaratne said...

Hashan said,

“Match fixing is something which has been in this country over a period of time. This has spread like a cancer today,”

“There were threats of this issue being exposed at various times. But it was kept quiet by giving money to various people.

“If the people who were responsible for that are listening to this, I state this today with great responsibility, I will shortly reveal the names of those responsible,”
Tillakaratne was quoted as saying by Sri Lanka’s Daily Mirror newspaper on Friday.

"Why was (Ajantha) Mendis removed to put another spinner? Kapugedara (Chamara) was never among runs but he was chosen to replace Chamara Silva. It is not fair, is it? But anyway, match fixing is something which has been in this country over a period"
-on April 30

"I can tell this in agreement with my conscience. Match fixing is not something that started happening yesterday or today. According to my knowledge, it happened since 1992. I say this with great responsibility," Tillakaratne said.
-on April 29

Former Sri Lanka captain Arjuna Ranatunga said he would "reveal more details" that is likely to substantiate Hashan Tillakaratne's match fixing allegations.

"I am planning to hold a press conference soon and will reveal more details on this," Ranatunga said from Colombo yesterday after his former teammate Tillakaratne revealed.

"I am suspicious about at least two matches. Sri Lankan players had no money then," he said. When asked why he did not disclose the information for 20 years, he said: "The truth would not have come out even now had this not been revealed by Tillakaratne."

By the way  yesterday Minister of Sports Mahindananda Aluthgamage has requested the police chief, Inspector general of Police Mahinda Balasuriya to investigate the match fixing claims made by the former Test Cricket Captain Hashan Tillakaratne

IPL and Sri Lanka Cricket

Chairman of the National Selection Committee Duleep Mendis has told all members of the Sri Lanka Cricket team , currently playing in the Indian Premier League are required to return to Sri Lanka by May 5.

He said that their arrival date in Sri Lanka was important in the light of the team leaving for England on May 10 during which they will play Three Test matches, Five One day Internationals and a one off Twenty20 match.

Meanwhile Mahela Jayawardene said that his country's cricket board (SLC) and the BCCI are likely to meet on Monday for a "dialogue" over the return of the players taking part in the IPL midway in the Twenty20 league for a tour of England at Kochi. Jayawardene said in the end the Sri Lankan players will have to abide by the decision of their board. "We are supposed to return to Sri Lanka by May 5. That is the direction we have been given. Dialogues are happening between the two boards. There is likely to be a meeting tomorrow," said Jayawardene. "Hopefully, I will get to stay longer." Mahela said.

Angelo Mathews promotes the importance of reading

Sri Lanka star and Room to Read Ambassador Angelo Mathews played his part in promoting the importance of literacy and access to books on Wednesday at a special reading event in Colombo.
Mathews met with children from across Sri Lanka who benefit from the work of Room to Read, one of the ICC’s social legacy partners for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011.

Mathews took part in a series of literacy based activities, before reading a passage from a cricket themed book to the children, before answering questions on Sri Lanka’s chances at the tournament.

“I really enjoyed having the opportunity to meet children from Room to Read and learn about how the organisation’s work is helping young people across Sri Lanka, said Mathews.”

“Room to Read is doing a lot to help young people have the chance to improve their literacy skills and benefit from an education and I think it is very important that we are raising awareness of these issues at the ICC Cricket World Cup. By providing young people with an education, they can then go on to play an important role in their own communities.”

A series of player appearances to promote the importance of reading are planned throughout the tournament as part of a wide range of activities to promote the event.

Reliance Life Insurance, in a first-of-its-kind initiative – ‘Boundaries for Books’ – will contribute Rs. 25,000 for every six hit during the ongoing ICC Cricket World Cup 2011.

This donation will be made to Room to Read, towards establishing libraries and providing local language and English books to disadvantaged children. Every single six will ensure that at least 30 children get access to fully functional libraries with books and trained teachers.
