Sri Lanka is taking measures to launch first geostationary satellite

Sri Lanka is taking measures to launch the country's first geostationary satellite in the near future as a prelude to the setting of its space agency.

Sri Lanka has invited two top Malaysian companies Maxis Communications Berhad and Telekom Malaysia to invest in the US$150 million maiden satellite project, a Malaysian news agency report said.

Both telecom companies which already have operations in Sri Lanka, have expressed interest in the project and to invest if the project is viable, Priyantha Kariyapperuma, director general of Sri Lanka's Telecom Regulatory Commission has told the Bernama news agency.

According to Kariyapperuma the deal is still in the preliminary stages and nothing constructive has emerged yet from the two companies. He expects a more sound response from the two telecom companies later this year.

Sri Lanka signed a deal with the United Kingdom-based Surrey Satellite Technologies Limited (SSTL) last December to launch the satellite.
